Custom Wine Cellars – Useful Tips for a Perfect Wine Cellar Design

A wine cellar is a storage room for wine in glass bottles or wooden barrels, or more rarely in carboys, amphorae, or even plastic containers. In an active wine cellar, important factors such as temperature and humidity are maintained by a climate control system.  By contrast, passive wine cellars are not climate-controlled, and are usually built underground to reduce temperature swings.  If you have an active cellar, than you have an active wine cellar cooling unit at work in the space.

In active wine cellars, the factors like temperature and humidity are controlled according to necessity as the room’s constant chill is maintained. An active wine cellar is hermetically sealed and therefore usually smaller than the basement itself. If an active wine cellar is very small then it’s sometime called a wine closet.

Passive wine cellars have temperature and humidity factors that are not considered. Passive wine cellars are generally constructed in basements which have less volatile temperature swings. In passive wine cellars, a natural low temperature is required, and that is why they are usually constructed underground in damp chilly spaces.

Wine is usually stored at temperatures that range between 7–18 °C  (or between 45–64 °F).  A temperature of 13 °C (55 °F), much like that found in the caves used to store wine in France, is ideal for both short-term storage and long-term aging.  Wine generally matures differently and more slowly at a lower temperature than it does at a higher temperature. When the temperature swings are significant, 14 degrees or more, it will cause the wine to breathe through the cork which significantly speeds up the aging process. Between 10–14 °C (50–57 °F), wines will age normally.
